Raheem Sterling is a precocious talent: confident on the ball, physically strong (particularly surprising given his slight physique), fast and intelligent. Or, at least, he has a lot of football intelligence.
However, he still has a long way to go. His finishing is poor for a player plying his trade in the final third, his passing isn't as accurate as it could be, there's certainly room for improvement in his defensive capabilities, and his on-field decision-making could be better.
His off-field decision-making could hardly be worse. I don't think he appreciates how lucky he is. He is playing for one of the top clubs in the UK, cheered on by the most passionate supporters in the world, and he has a manager in Brendan Rodgers who believes in him and who has overlooked his many off-field indiscretions, shaping him into a potential world-class footballer. At Liverpool, he has a role to play as a key member of the squad. At any other big club, he's just another wannabe who'll likely spend more time warming the bench than worrying defenders.
As many others have commented, he is being very badly advised by his agent. His position would be a lot stronger if he had been able to maintain the form that he showed towards the end of the 2013/14 season throughout the current season. But the sad fact is that he has been very inconsistent this year, and hasn't exactly set the Premier League alight. I think his value might have actually declined after this season.
Now it appears that Raheem is going to tell the Liverpool top-brass that he wants out.
Luis Suárez's shenanigans at the end of the 2012/13 season led Fenway Sports Group (FSG) to make it clear to him who the boss was, and that he was only going to leave on their terms, not his (although Suárez showed them he was the boss after he took a big bite out of that argument at the World Cup). I fully expect FSG to try the same tack with Raheem, and keep him on his current, miserly pay of a mere £30,000/week (around US$47,000/week, or a pathetic $2.5M/year) until he sees sense and signs a new contract. Except that I doubt his agent, one Aidy Ward, would be happy with that arrangement.
However, Liverpool fans have a big flaw: we're big on loyalty. We don't like to see our players want to trade-up to a better club (because there are no better clubs - doh!) and we don't like to see under-performing pip-squeaks holding the club to ransom - particularly when the club has been the making of the player, rather than the other way around. If Sterling thinks he'll achieve success by becoming a (very wealthy) squad player at a club with no pedigree, such as Manchester City, then fine. Let's cash him in and use the money to sign a player who is (a) committed to the Liverpool cause, and (b) going to make a difference in the 2015/16 season. Let's put some Sterling back in the bank.
Goodbye Raheem! In two years, no-one will remember you...
